5 Tools To Help You Track Down a Candidates Email Address When it comes to recruiting, finding the right candidate profile isnt the hard part. The real hard part is  getting in touch with that person! However, it doesnt have to be, and is probably much easier than you think. If you utilize the right tools and know where to look, you will be able on your way to a more meaningful and successful approach, that doesnt have to begin with Id like to connect with you on LinkedIn. Below are 5 tools and tips I use on a regular basis to make sure I can locate the best email contact information for a candidate. 1. Hunter (formerly known as Email Hunter) Hunter is a Chrome extension that uses the email naming convention of a company to guess the proper email address. For example, if your name is Joe Smith and your company uses the email template of jsmith@company.com, it is easy to guess another employees email if you know their name; its clearly the first letter of the first name followed by last name at company.com. So, if you are on Sally Andrews LinkedIn page, Hunter would come up with the guess sandrews@company.com. Hunter will only find work-related emails and you are allowed 150 uses per month for free. The search is based off of the most recent employer on that persons LinkedIn page, so if the individual no longer works for that company, this will be a dead email. 2. Lusha Another Chrome extension called  Lusha will find both personal emails as well as phone numbers. It scours the web to pickup anywhere this persons email and or phone number is located. It is important to note that Lusha only allows 10 free uses per month (however for a price you can upgrade this option) and the free uses are shared between organizations. So, for example, if someone else from your company uses a company email address to sign up for Lusha, you are both sharing the 10 (imagine when an organization of 50 signs up?) 3. Prophet This is also another chrome extension, Prophet scours the web for contact information as well as other sites this candidate may own or be on. Prophet works like Lusha and Hunter combined. It will search the web for a personal email address, however if it cannot find any it will take a guess of the email based on where the individual works. Like Hunter it uses the most recent work information listed on LinkedIn. If the candidate hosts any blogs or other sites it will list those as well in the extension. 4. Basic GitHub search A good portion of Github users have an email publicly listed on their main profile page. Just perform a simple Google search of the candidates name + GitHub and you will bring up their profile, if they have one. Once on their profile site more times than not you can see their email in their contact info. 5. GitHub API search GitHubs API feature allows you to open a page of code associated with the user you are searching. More times than not lying within this code is their email. First you will use the following web address: api.github.com/users/xxxxxxxx/events/public. Then you will replace the xxxxxxxx portion in that address with the GitHub username of the person you are searching for. More times than not this will open a webpage of this persons code. Click ctrl + F to open the find function and then enter the @ symbol. This will find any @ symbols listed in the code, which most of the time is their email address. And of course once you have the candidates email, you want to make sure you are writing an email worth responding to.   Send a poorly written email and all of this work goes to waste. Therefore, the better we understand the decision maker the better we can answer his questions thus improving the chances for getting the job. This sounds logical doesn’t it? So let’s talk about the types of interviewers one may face. There are a number of systems that are used to label people; DISC is one of them and there are others as well. While working for a major pharmaceutical company, I was introduced to another system, called MBS, Management By Strengths (www.strengths.com). MBS is very simple to use and could prove extremely helpful. As a job candidate, if you can quickly identify what type of person the interviewer is and adapt to his style and needs, you’ve already achieved at least 50 percent success. MBS recognizes four types of people, and to make the system memorable, the people are identified by colors as follows. RED stands for directness. Red types focus on the result, on being in control, and on solving problems. They have strong egos and are hard-driving and decisive. Most of the time reds are calm, but occasionally they erupt like volcanoes, letting you have it. And then everything goes back to normal. Being interviewed by a red requires that you be direct and to the point. Red will want you to explain WHAT. Focus on results, and talk about actions. GREEN stands for extroversion. Here the focus is on people. Green types are outgoing, cheerful, mostly positive, enthusiastic, and pleasant. They like teamworkworking with people. Greens are talkative: Have you had an interview where the interviewer did the lion’s share of the talking? How frustrating! During an interview with a green, you should show enthusiasm, be interactive, and explain WHO. Elaborate on your involvement with teams, act friendly, and be open. BLUE stands for pace. Blue types value timing, harmony, and cooperation. They seem cool under pressure. They hate being rushed and are therefore excellent planners. Schedules and deadlines are very important to blues. They seem relaxed and easygoing. When interviewing with a blue, show that you’re calm and in control. Explain WHEN. Focus on timing and harmony. Show how you kept everything under control and on time. YELLOW stands for structure. Yellow types are constantly taking notes. They believe that if it’s in writing, then it’s a fact. In their lives, everything is filed away for future use. In their offices there are papers, files, books everywhere. Yellows are naturally good organizers. They love to be right and hate to be criticized. Therefore they gather all the facts and are very careful and slow in making decisions. Yellows don’t take change well. They appreciate knowing the rules, expectations, and instructions. When interviewing with a yellow, explain WHY. Be as detailed as possible. Focus on doing the right things. Talk about documented facts. Act organized and specific. So, now that you know the basics about these four types of people, your job is to quickly decide what color your interviewer is. How to be nice... when youre the boss - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Linda and Robin (authors of the excellent book The Power of Nice) just blogged about niceness in managers, and their post is one of those bad-news-good-news deals. First the bad news. They write that: Some scientific studies suggest that being in a position of authority has a unique effect on the human brain, that can cause people to become less sympathetic to the emotions and concerns of others?and as history has shown us, this can have a devastating effect on a business? bottom line. I agree completely. There are two unfortunate factors working against niceness in management: 1: Many organizations dont see niceness as a success factor in managers. When they promote people to management positions, they may pick people who are professional, experienced, assertive, etc. Studies also show, that they tend to pick people who are taller than average and have good hair. Seriously. In fact, being nice can actually hinder your career prospects. Just think of the old saw that Nice guys finish last. 2: Being given authority can actually make a person less nice. Bob Sutton wrote about this in The No Asshole Rule: One of the simplest and yet most fascinating experiments to test the thesis is the cookie crumbles experiment. Researchers placed college students in groups of three and gave them an artificial assignment collaboration on a short policy paper about a social issue. They then randomly assigned one of the students to evaluate the other two for points that would affect their ability to win a cash bonus. Having set up this artificial power hierarchy, researchers then casually brought to working trios plates containing five cookies. They found that not only did the disinhibited powerful students eat more than their share of the cookies, they were more likely to chew with their mouths open and to scatter crumbs over the table. Fortunately, theres good news too in Lindas and Robins post. In order for NICE guys who made it to the top to avoid falling victim to the power paradox, all they need to do is flex their NICE muscles, daily. They go on to give some specific actions that managers can take to stay nice. Go read their post, its excellent. And of course I hardly have to add that nice managers are essential to happiness at work.
